Aunt Gratia's Bread




  • 1/2 C. sugar

  • 2 1/2 lbs. flour

  • 2 1/2 C. milk

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • 1 stick butter

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast

  • 1/2 C.water


  • Dissolve yeast in 1/2 C. water.

  • Scald milk and add butter, sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm.

  • Add yeast mixture.

  • Sift flour into another bowl and add liquid mixture.

  • Beat vigorously.

  • Turn out onto floured board and knead for 10 min. or so.

  • Return to bowl, cover, and let rise for about two hours till doubled in bulk.

  • Divide for loaf pans (3 large or 4 small).

  • Knead for 5 min., place in greased pans and let rise again till doubled in bulk (about two hours).

  • Bake in 350 oven for about an hour, or more if large loaves.

  • Brush tops of loaves with butter, and turn out of pans onto sides to cool.
